From the back package:
"Historical Background:
The drop spindle is an ancient device used to spin wool into yarn and has been used in nearly every part of the world. drop spindles were used before recorded history and have been documented back to the 1st century A.D. A drop spindle consists of a shaft and a whorl. The whorl acts as a flywheel to help spin the spindle shaft. The spinning motion causes the wool fibers to twist into a long strand of yarn. The drop spindle used for wool needs to have a heavier whorl than a hand spindle used to sping cotton because wool fibers are longer than cotton fibers.
The simplicity and effectiveness of a portable drop spindle gives it advantages over the more complicated and costly spinning wheel."
